St Denys Parish Church
Dundee Road, St Denys, SO17 2ND
stdenys.church 023 8067 1757
The St Denys riverside district takes its name from the Augustinian Priory founded here in 1127, of which little now remains. Our beautiful church was built in 1867 by the renowned architect Sir George Gilbert Scott – the same visionary behind London’s St Pancras Railway Station. Constructed in red brick with warm Bath limestone dressings, it’s a fine example of gothic revival architecture, with its intricate decorations and gargoyles. The South Aisle was added in 1889, and the Church Centre built in 1997 thoughtfully incorporating materials from earlier buildings, including timber trusses from the 1910 church hall.
Inside, you’ll find precious fragments of our medieval heritage – encaustic tiles from the original Priory pavement and a stone coffin dating from the 12th to 13th century. These tangible links to Southampton’s past remind us that St Denys has been a gathering place for our community for nearly 900 years, connecting us to generations of local people who’ve called this riverside neighbourhood home.

Woodies at the Junction
Priory Road, St Denys, SO17 2JZ
junction@woodiesgroup.com 023 8039 1330
Woodies at the Junction stands on the corner of Priory Road and Adelaide Road. The original building, dating from the mid-19th century, was built on an L-shaped plan, but a single-storey bar was built in the angle in the late 19th century.
It is thought to have been called the Wareham Arms in the 1860s when Thomas Flood was the landlord, but it was renamed the Junction before 1878, when it was shown as a beer house on the 1878 Drink Map. After closing for refurbishment, Woodies at the Junction re-opened in 2023 with a smart, modern feel whilst preserving historic features such as the Grade II listed bar area.
As well as a good selection of drinks (including alcohol-free Budvar on tap), Woodies serves a great selection of snacks and pizzas and has a large child-friendly beer garden.

According to Sotonopedia, a primitive Methodist congregation initially met in an upper room in a house in Priory Road and it was not until 1866 that a permanent church was built at its present location on the same road. The building was later extended into Ivy Road, and registered for worship 24 January 1885. It became St Denys Methodist Church in 1933. The church closed down in 1969 and the site was sold to the New Testament Church of God in May 1971.
